Italian Statuary Marble Bust of Dante

About the Item

A well-modelled, mid 19th century statuary white marble bust of Dante Alighieri, famed late 13th to early 14th century Italian philosopher, writer and poet. Originating from Italy, this impressive marble bust depicts Dante as he is often portrayed in artistic works, wearing a cloak to his shoulders and cap to his head. It is decorated with a laurel wreath, symbolising his prominent status as a poet. The bust has been exceptionally carved by an Italian artisan into the finest marble, the face captured particularly well with details of the cheek bones, nose and temple still sharply defined after more than 170 years. Elevated by a socle base, this antique Italian bust is a spectacular decorative piece for an interior, looking striking displayed on a column or pedestal where the bust’s quality can be observed from every angle. Dante Dante Alighieri was an Italian writer and a very important figure of the Renaissance period. Though he died in 1321, Dante’s works have lived on throughout the centuries, his epic poem ‘La Commedia’ (also known as ‘The Divine Comedy’) considered one of the world’s greatest works of literature. Tenerani Statuary Marble Bust of a Young Augustus Caesar
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A finely carved statuary white marble bust of a young Augustus Caesar attributed to the workshops of 19th century Italian sculptor Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869). Also known as Young Octavian, this bust of a young Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar is after a sculpture found in the Pio Clementino Museums of the Vatican. Carved with exceptional detail, the bust is elevated on a turned socle and bears the name ‘TENERANI’ to the front. Other busts like this one after the Vatican original of the former Emperor Augustus were sculpted in the Mid-18th Century. Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869) was a notable Italian sculptor of the early 19th century. In his early career, he trained under Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, before moving to Rome where he won a scholarship as a pupil of Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvalsden. Having honed his skills, Tenerani worked from a studio of his own in later years. William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, Queen Victoria and Pope Pius IX...

John de Vaere Statuary Marble Busts
Located in London, GB
A fine pair of George III statuary marble busts of a boy and a girl by John de Vaere (1755 – 1830), 1798. Signed J DE-VAERE Sculpr. 1798. Considering what a sensitive and accomplished sculptor he was, surprisingly little is known about John de Vaere. Born in France in 1755, he settled in England some time before 1786 when he enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1787 he left to study in Rome, with the financial assistance of Josiah Wedgwood. In Rome he won a Silver Medal for Sculpture from the Pope and became an assistant to John Flaxman. On his return to England in 1790, he worked as a modeler for Wedgwood until the latter’s death in 1795, after which he worked with Eleanor Coade, probably replacing John Bacon...
