Pr. 19th C. Italian Carrara Marble Children Reading & Writing, Signed A. Piazza

About the Item

A Pair of 19th Century Italian Hand-Carved and Hand-Polished Carrara Marble Models of Children Reading and Writing, Signed A. Piazza, After Antonio Canova. Antonio Canova (1757–1822), the renowned Italian neoclassical sculptor, is celebrated for his mastery of marble and his ability to convey grace and purity in his figures. His works, inspired by classical antiquity, emphasize idealized beauty and refined execution. Canova’s influence extended throughout Europe, and his sculptures, including his celebrated Cupid and Psyche and The Three Graces, are regarded as some of the finest examples of neoclassical sculpture. The present pair, created in his style, embodies the sculptural precision and classical ideals that defined Canova’s approach to figural representation. Each sculpture depicts two seated children engaged in the acts of reading and writing. Each figure is positioned atop a square plinth, with draped cloth partially covering the surface. The child on the left is shown intently reading from an open book, legs crossed and head slightly tilted downward, capturing a moment of quiet concentration. The figure on the right is absorbed in writing, with one foot dangling while delicately holding a stylus and tablet. Both figures display meticulous carving, particularly in the naturalistic rendering of their youthful expressions, softly curled hair, and subtly modeled limbs. The smooth, hand-polished Carrara marble accentuates the lifelike quality of the figures, enhancing their sense of softness and realism. These sculptures follow the classical tradition of idealized childhood, a subject often explored in neoclassical art. The drapery folds and gentle postures reflect a harmonious balance of movement and stillness, with a restrained elegance characteristic of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The choice of Carrara marble, renowned for its luminous quality and fine grain, allows for a high level of detail and precision, evident in the delicate features and polished surfaces of the figures. Each sculpture is signed on the reverse "a. Piazza", as well as dated "1890" and inscribed with Italian writing. Italy, Circa: 1890
