About the Item

This is a Viennese bronze bust of Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, known for his visionary leadership and profound impact on Jewish history. The bust captures Herzl’s distinctive features, including his iconic full beard and thoughtful expression, evoking his role as a pioneer of the Zionist movement. The sculpture is mounted on a polished marble base, inscribed with “Doctor Herzl” and the years of his life, 1860–1904. This inscription underscores the commemorative purpose of the piece, honoring Herzl’s life and contributions. The base is surrounded by metal posts connected by chains, creating a formal and respectful enclosure. These details, combined with the marble and bronze elements, give the piece a sense of gravitas and reverence. This sculpture is both a tribute to Herzl’s legacy and a striking representation of his enduring influence on Jewish history and the establishment of modern Zionism. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a Lifetime Certificate of Authenticity and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.

A Bronze Figurine of Three Jewish Men in Conversation, Austria late 19th Century
Located in New York, NY
A Small bronze figurine of two Jewish men with several stereotypical physical features commonly attributed to Jewish men: large noses, sidelocks, and beards. They are wearing caftans (kaftans) belted by wide sashes at the waist. A caftan is a long-sleeved, ankle-length coat with an open-cut at the front. Many Eastern Polish and Western Russian Jews began wearing caftans fastened with wide, oriental-style sashes in the late medieval period. The garb later spread to Central Europe, but in place of the sash, a cord was used to close the front of the garment instead. These garments were often worn by peddlers and itinerant vendors who traveled the countryside and sold goods to the public. However, old prejudices stemming from the economic and professional restrictions placed on early European Jews, along with Christians’ disdain for the professions Jews were allowed to practice, formed an antisemitic stereotype of the greedy Jew who exploited Gentiles. This canard was often visually depicted as a Jewish peddler...
