Chinese Set of Eighteen Blanc de Chine Enameled Ceramic Arhats or Luohan Buddhas

About the Item

A rare set of eighteen Blanc de Chine Style Enameled - Glazed Ceramic Arhat, also known as Luohans, the disciples of Buddha, each bearing the mark and style of the Chinese maker Zeng Longsheng. The Eighteen Arhats (or Luohan) (Chinese: ????; pinyin: Shíba Luóhàn; Wade–Giles: Shih-pa Lo-han) are depicted in Mahayana Buddhism as the original followers of Gautama Buddha (arhat) who have followed the Noble Eightfold Path and attained the four stages of enlightenment. They have reached the state of Nirvana and are free of worldly cravings. They are charged to protect the Buddhist faith and to wait on earth for the coming of Maitreya, an enlightened Buddha prophesied to arrive on earth many millennia after Gautama Buddha's death (parinirvana). In China, the eighteen arhats are also a popular subject in Buddhist art, such as the famous Chinese group of glazed pottery luohans from Yixian from about 1000 CE. Each individual figure stamped with the maker's seal (unknown). Circa: mid 20th century.     Repaired: One Arhat appears to have some old plaster or glue or old cleaning past on one of his right arms which may have been a fill-in restoration, but may just also just be old cleaning paste residue. Another small fill-in restoration to his hip. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. A truly beautiful and rare complete set of the 18 Arhats, also known as Luohans. Overall condition is very good with minor fading and age wear losses. Some old plaster or cleaning paste residue on a few Arhats. Please view all images.
