Our patinated bronze, La Tragédie, after the French sculptor, Francisque Duret (1804-1865) measures 37.5 in (95 cm) and is in good condition, with a warm green-tinted brown patina. Originally sculpted in marble, La Tragédie and La Comédie were commissioned by the Théâtre Français in 1851. Residing in Salle Richelieu, part of the Palais-Royal complex in Paris, it is the oldest continually operating theater company in the world. Marbles of La Tragedie and La Comedie also reside in the collection of the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse, as seen in our photo. Our magnificent bronze, entitled Der Gladiator, depicting a Roman gladiator preparing to fight was modeled by the German artist, Heinrich Baucke (1875-1915). Mounted to a green variegated marble plinth measuring 23 by 15 inches and with an overall height of 39 inches. Signed on the base with the stamped mark of the foundry, DUSSELDORFER BRONCEGIESSEREI G.m.b.H. The artist enjoyed a prestigious career.  According to the Benezit, Baucke studied under Karl Janssen at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts.  In 1903 Baucke moved to Berlin and executed several commissions for Kaiser Wilhelm II including a major work at the Royal Palace in Berlin (known since the end of the monarchy in 1918 as the Berlin Palace) and supervision of the development of the Schlossplatz palace square.  Commissions included the Monument to William I at Rotthausen, the bronze of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia at the town hall in Elberfeld, a statue of King Frederick I, a stone statue of Maurice of Nassau and marble busts of Helmuth von Moltke, Chief of the German General Staff, and German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck...

A large 19th century patinated bronze group titled: "Amalthea and Jupiter's Goat" after Pierre Julien (French 1731-1804) The goddess portrayed as nude but for drapery held across her breasts and falling to her lap, seated on the back of the goat with her right foot raised to rest on a rock outcrop. In classical mythology, Hebe, the personification of youth, is also cupbearer to the gods. She is the daughter of Juno and Jupiter (represented here by his eagle). Seated between his wings, she is holding the oinochoe (wine pitcher) in one arm while with her free hand she gracefully offers him divine nectar known as ambrosia, a drink which reinforced the Olympians' immortality.
