About the Item

This rare and remarkable "Head of a Potter" in the pebbly Sung glaze by Jais Nielsen is both strong and subtle, an evocative and beautiful capturing of a young man's visage, no doubt a colleague of Nielsen's at the Royal Copenhagen porcelain works where this piece was made. Nielsen was one of Denmark's leading ceramicists and sculptors in the early 20th century, and he produced a wide range of vases and other pieces for Royal Copenhagen between 1921 and 1928, this being, arguably, his greatest work during this period. Only a small number are known to exist, some in a deep red, oxblood glaze, and others in the variegated Sung glaze inspired by Chinese ceramics from the Sung period between the 10th and 13th centuries. Nielsen was also known for his painting, and joined the "De Tretten" or Group of Thirteen from 1909 to 1910, whose members stressed social themes. Two years later he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. This piece is signed by Nielsen along with the Royal Copenhagen mark.
