About the Item

An attractive and most charming Italian 19th century white Carrara and Vert de Patricia marble statue of Galatea and Pan. The statue depicts a beautiful nymph Galatea standing aside a bust of Pan (the god of the wild, nature and companion to the nymphs) while a flowing garment gently lays on her leg. She stands with her left hand placed on Pan's head while she looks down at the seashell in her right hand. At her feet are finely carved laurel vines alongside a bowed ribbon tied on a scepter with an acorn finial. The statue is supported on a wonderful three piece pedestal displaying an octagonal base below a circular mottled socle column. The central support displays a striking and most decorative spiral fluted design. Above is the circular display surface with a mottled border. Pan being the god of the wind and companion to the nymphs fell in love with Galatea, but she was in love with a mortal shepherd. In his frustration, Pan caused the sea to become turbulent, stirring up waves and winds. Galatea could calm the sea by holding a seashell to her ear and listening to the sound of the waves.
