Julius Paul Schmidt-Felling - The Archer, Bronze Sculpture, Germany, Berlin 1900

About the Item

The Archer - Antique bronze sculpture by Julius Paul Schmidt-Felling Dimensions: H x W x D: 32 x 10 x 12 cm Description: Bronze figure mounted on a cuboid base made of serpentine stone. On a naturalistic background we see a young man dressed only in a loincloth preparing his longbow for the competition. Concentrating on what he is doing, the young athlete has his gaze directed downwards to his hands and is about to tighten the bowstring. We can almost imagine how he will lift the heavy longbow and take aim in the next moment. Standing in a lunge, his body is already slightly tense; in this preparatory situation, the muscles of the legs in particular are clearly defined. As observers of the scene, we eagerly wait for the athlete to draw the bow and tense his upper body muscles. The signature of the artist Schmidt-Felling can be found on the naturalistic background. Julius Paul Schmidt-Felling was born in 1835 in Berlin, in what was then the Kingdom of Prussia, and died in 1920. The sculptor's works primarily depict nudes, athletes, mythological warriors, workers and children at play. Many of his works were realized by the Berlin art foundry Gladenbeck, others by the small foundry Robert Kionsek. In fine condition with a small chip to the marble base. Antique German Oxidised Metal Figurative Pen Holder By WMF, Circa 1900
Located in Greven, DE
This charming antique sculpture was crafted by WMF, short for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, a renowned German manufacturer of fine metalware founded in 1853 and still in operation today. While best known for its tableware designs, WMF also produced a variety of decorative objects, including sculptures, exemplified by this delightful piece from our collection. The sculpture depicts a young boy dressed in typical late 19th to early 20th century working-class attire, including a flat cap. An apron tied around his waist suggests he is at work - possibly as a florist, as implied by the large scrolls cradled in his arms. These scrolls were originally aimed to be used as pen holders but can also serve to display other small items. Finely cast, the sculpture features intricate details such as fabric folds and hair texture, all enhanced by its monochrome oxidised finish. The figure stands atop an ornate Rococo style base adorned with C-scrolls, which also serve as the feet of the piece. The base is stamped ‘WMFB’, indicating both the manufacturer and the use of Britannia metal. Below this is the ‘OX’ mark, denoting that the surface has been oxidised - a process in which recessed areas are chemically darkened while raised surfaces are polished to a matte finish using pumice. An indistinct ’18’ mark is also stamped on the base. Blending stylistic elegance with technical craftsmanship, this antique pen holder...
