Art Deco Figurative Sculptures

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

Daum Amber Champagne Leaded Art Glass Pate de Cristal Tulip Vase, Large
By Daum
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Daum Amber leaded art glass crystal tulip vase, large. MSRP 17,200 USD. Made at the Daum Studio in Nancy, France. No longer in production. Daum was founded by Jean Daum in 1878 and became the epitome of the Art Nouveau aesthetic in glasswork. During the Universal Exhibition of 1900, Jean Daum was awarded a ‘Grand Prix’ medal. Daum studio glass became more, more elaborate at the dawn of the 20th century. Acid etching (by Jacques Grüber) was often combined with carving, enamelling, and engraving on a single piece of glass to produce creative glass masterpieces. The most complicated creations also featured applied glass elements, such as handles and ornamental motifs in naturalistic forms. Jean Daum (no relation to Jean Claude Van Damme, btw) passed on his business to his sons, Auguste and Antonin and the brothers soon became a major force in the Art Nouveau movement, seriously rivaling Gallé, so much so that when Émile Gallé died in 1904 they became the leaders in the field of decorative glass. Perhaps the most monumental moment in Daum studio history came in 1906, when the brothers revived the Pâte de Verre (glass paste), an ancient Egyptian method of glass casting (described below) and developed the method to such an extent that by the 1930's, whole window panels and large vessels were crafted using the ancient method instead of leaded or painted glass (which had become the most popular method of colored glass production in 19th century Northern Europe). Pâte de verre is a form of kiln casting and literally translated means glass paste. In the Pâte de verre process, finely crushed glass (or crystal, in Pâte de cristal) is mixed with a binding material, such as a mixture of gum Arabic and water, and often with enamels. The resultant paste is applied to the inner surface of a negative mould forming a coating. After the coated mould is fired at the appropriate temperature the glass is fused creating a hollow object that can have thick or thin walls depending on the thickness of the pate de verre layers. The monumental crystal vase...

Bouraine Marcel André "Woman with Flowers" Art Deco Terracotta Signed circa 1930
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Very beautiful Art Deco terracotta by Marcel Bouraine depicting a denuded woman sitting on the floor holding flowers in her arms. Signature of the artist on the terrace. Marcel André Bouraine (1886-1948) is a French sculptor born in Pontoise. He studied sculpture under the direction of Joseph-Alexandre Falguière. Captured by the Germans during the First World War, he was interned in Switzerland. Back in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries in 1922. After a beginnings still impregnated by academism, Bouraine is revealed in the 1925s as one of the most representative sculptors of Art Deco. Bouraine is a member of the Society of French Artists and participates in the Salon d'Automne. In 1928 he collaborated with Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, who commissioned several sculptures, as well as with his friend Pierre Le Faguays. He also exhibits two monumental sculptures at the Universal Exhibition of 1937 in Paris. He mainly created decorative statues of women...
