Art Deco Figurative Sculptures

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

François-Emile Décorchemont French, 1880-1997 François Décorchemont, originally an accomplished painter and potter of recognized ability, turned to the making of glass in 1904. Pâté de verre was the medium in which he excelled and for which he is best known. After studying decorative art in Paris, François Décorchemont returned to his native Conches in 1910 to develop new techniques in stained glass, particularly in the use of crystal to give multicolored and faceted panes. After 1909, while continuing to produce fine glass paste pieces, Francois Decorchemont began to experiment with a new casting technique. François Decorchemont, Emile's son and also an artist, helped out in his father’s studio, in particular helping him to research the possibilities of creating jeweled adornments in pates d'email (enamel pastes) for Gerome's polychrome sculptural creations. Francois Décorchemont, a potter and painter at the outset of his career, became fascinated with the IDEA of developing and utilizing a thin translucent glass material in his work. It was in essence the revival and an adaptation of a long forgotten Egyptian glass-making process using colored crystal powdered glass, metallic oxides and an adhesive paste. This "new" material, known as pâte de verre was developed around the turn of the century, principally at the Sevres porcelain factory, by a number of artists working there, notably Henri Cros and Albert Dammouse. The end of the 19th century was an illuminated period in the history of art. Impressionist painting appeared and created an interest in glass as material. Traditional sculpting materials such as bronze and marble made way for glass with its possibilities of light and color. Henry Cros and François Décorchemont became the leaders of French pâte de verre and facilitated the proliferation of this colorful glass. His first major work, in 1934, was inn the Eglise Sainte-Odile near Porte Champerret in Paris, some 300 square meters of brilliant colors. After the war, he devoted his work to churches in the Eure, including of course Beuzeville where, thanks to the generosity of the local council, the church is lit at night so that his work can be admired from outside. During the first half of the 20th century a number of French artists became famous for their work in pâte de verre, and Francois Decorchemont among them. March 2014, 20th Century’s Greatest Art Dealer Felix Marcilhac’s Collection Privee at Sotheby’s - Chang Yi Entrusts Antoine Leperlier in the Bidding of a Francois Decorchemon's Original. It has been reported that Felix Marcilhac’s Collection Privee auction at Sotheby’s brought in 33,125 Euros (28,000 RMB), three times the estimated price. Early 20th Century Art Deco Gilt Bronze Sculpture "Isis" by Claire Colinet
Located in London, GB
An exquisite early 20th Century French Art Deco gilt bronze figure of a young female dancer seated upon a shawl that she is lifting either side of her. The surface decorated with enamel painted ancient Egyptian design, exhibiting excellent colour and detail. Raised on a marble base and signed Cl.J.R.Colinet ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Height: 42 cm Width: 56 cm Depth: 21 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition Circa: 1925 Materials: Bronze & Marble Book Ref: Art Deco & Other Figures by Bryan Catley Page: 117 SKU: 9176 ABOUT Colinet Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet (1880–1950) was French sculptor of Belgian birth who worked during the early-to-mid 20th century. The subject matter of her best known work was primarily Arab female dancers. The majority of her career output in sculpture can be classified as being of the Art Deco style. Colinet was a frequent exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Francais and Salon des Independents art exhibitions in Paris. Her sculptures, most of which depicted beautifully figured, energized, and dramatic female forms, were exhibited posthumously at the Paris Salon for nearly 30 years. Early Life Colinet was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1880. Little is known about her life other than the artwork she produced during a successful career that spanned more than 40 years. As a woman, she was in the minority in her chosen field of sculpture during the era in which she worked and lived. Career At an undetermined date – probably around 1910 – Colinet emigrated to Paris, France, where she studied sculpture under the watchful eye of Jef Lambeaux and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1913 and became a permanent member of the organization in 1929. From 1937 to 1940, she exhibited at the Salon des Independents in Paris and joined the Union of Women Painters and Sculptors. Colinet's work is primarily done in the Art Deco style, and her models included odalisques, exotic dancers, jugglers and artists of cabaret. A number of her female dancer pieces were influenced by a revival of the Orientalism movement which had been popular in Europe from about 1860 to 1880. Her preferred casting material was bronze; however, a number of her most distinguished sculptures are chryselephantine, being a combination of both bronze and ivory. Colinet's sculpture has become highly desirable to collectors and, increasingly, is selling for exorbitant sums. At a Christie's sale on 4 May 2007, her Ankara Dancer...

Art Nouveau Patinated Plaster of Paris Sculpture by Joseph Zomers Belgium
By Joseph Zomers
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Statuette of a naked woman sitting in patinated plaster of Paris; plaster of Paris, is a very resistant material, used since ancient times, it was used by the ancient Egyptians as a binder in the construction of the pyramids and is used in sculpture for its strength, the name is linked to the ancient quarries of Montmartre in Paris; the statue is a work of the famous Belgian sculptor and bronze artist Joseph Zomers which he executed between 1915 and 1920 and whose signature is on the pedestal. The woman is represented posing with ill-concealed malice and shows without reticence her body with a thin erotic veil, the artist has not executed the face precisely to accentuate a mysterious charm; it is a figure of harmonic proportions that takes into greater consideration the erotic connotations, however, a refined and elegant eroticism that presents itself in a courteous manner, subtle and suggestive but at the same time provocative and irreverent; the woman, in her most intimate dimension, as a naked presence, defenseless but seductive, becomes the embodiment of the poetic essence of the artist, the emblematic figure of his aesthetics. It is an object in perfect Art Nouveau style (Jugendstil), in fact, many artists of this current used eroticism as their work, portraying women as ethereal and fatal beings, letting themselves be inspired by "le beau sexe" thanks to their naked forms, soft and seductive. Joseph Zomers was born in Liege in Belgium in 1895 and died in 1928; he studied art in Maredsous (Belgium), many of his works are permanently exhibited at the Musèe de Liège; Zomers is well known for his public monument "Tchantchès" in Liege. This great work in stone and bronze is located in the Otremeuse district in Rue Pont-Saint-Nicolas; designed by Joseph Zomers, the statue represents a "hiercheuse", the name was given to the women who pulled the carts in the mine, a tribute to those valiant young people vilified and victims of the exploitation of women's labor, the woman holds aloft the puppet of Tchantchès. Tchantchès is the name given to a puppet that appeared in Liège in the 19th century. The popular character, Tchantchès became over time the archetype of the goodman of Liege, witty and good-natured, wise and subtle, quick to find resolutions and fertile in resources, when he is depressed, he recovers with a joke that reveals the popular Walloon citizen, mocking and sentimental. It was therefore fitting to erect a monument to these two popular and significant symbols of the proud city...
