About the Item

An antique Minton Hollins & Co tile depicting putti playing, a design after 18th century artist Francois Boucher. Sourced from an ex British private collection, this 8-inch pressed tile has stood the test of time displaying the cherubs and stylised whales in a rich orange on a smooth white glaze. Dating to circa 1880, this is an excellent example of Minton work, preserved throughout history for over 140 years. A stunning piece of artwork that would look wonderful on display in a period and contemporary properties alike. The number 145 is marked to the back. François Boucher (1703–1770) François Boucher is associated with the conceptualisation of the Rococo style. He worked in nearly every medium and genre, creating a personal style that found wide reproduction in prints, such as this tile. Throughout his career he was known for marketing his work well, providing designs for various decorative arts, including porcelain. Minton Hollins & Co A factory was founded by Thomas Minton in 1793. His son, Herbert Minton, started making tiles in the 1830s. In 1845, the tile department became a separate concern under Michael Daintry Hollins (who had became Herbert Minton’s partner in that year), but in partnership with the china business, trading as Minton & Co.
