Silver Wire Mineral Specimen with Calcite Crystals – Kongsberg, Norway

About the Item

Native silver is among a handful of minerals that have been deemed inherently valuable by mankind since antiquity. In the world of mineral collecting, silver specimens and sulfosalts are revered classics with a cult-like following. While rare, well-formed crystallized silver is scarce, often lacking the precision found in other minerals. Generally speaking, wire silver specimens are the more aesthetic alternative for their dramatic and artistic formations. Many of the most coveted of these wire silver specimens are from the Freiberg district of Germany, and the mines of Kongsberg, Norway. This striking silver wire specimen is composed of an amalgamation of numerous, thin, naturally bound wires that create a thick, curving form. Proportionate and dramatic, it tapers towards its tip giving it a likeness to a majestic ram’s horn. A rich and multi-colored patina intensifies this likeness and defines the many delicate wires within for added texture and depth. Colorless, well-formed calcites, with their icy translucence and luster, add a dramatic yet complementary contrast to the silver, making for a dynamic and attractive overall display.
