About the Item

Large and impressive, this unique Art Deco urn by Waylande Gregory depicts two flying phoenix birds, wings outstretched and brilliantly plumed in shades of deep periwinkle and silver. The ground is glazed in a blush of green and blue, accented with gold and silver stars. Gregory was one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II. He was prodigious and indefatigable, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic during his years working with Lorado Taft and later for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums. The urn is signed on the lower edge.
