About the Item

A very fine vintage hand-crafted studio pottery faceted bud vase by renowned potter Atsuya Hamada (Japanese, 1932-1986) and made at the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall dating from 1958. Richard Batterham (British, 1936 – 2021) whose personal collection this delightful vase comes from was greatly influenced by the work of Atsuya Hamada, the son of Shoji Hamada, and who worked at the Leach Pottery from 1956. Hamada potted on a kick wheel which he had brought to the pottery from Japan and was operated by the potters feet. The stoneware vase stands on a flat unglazed foot with a small glazed element to the centre of the base and has eight faceted sides forming the body with a slightly flaring narrow neck. The body of the vase is decorated in black and brown tenmoku glazes with mottled stone colored glazes applied to the neck. The vase has an impressed Leach Pottery mark to the base. Provenance: Acquired from the estate of Richard Batterham, who spent two years from 1957 as an apprentice working alongside Bernard Leach at the Leach Pottery and was greatly influenced by the work of Atsuya Hamada who started working at the pottery around the same time, the son of Shoji Hamada. He acquired a number of pieces directly from the artists he worked with and also through Hay Hill in London. Thence consigned by a gentleman owner and collector. In good condition.
