About the Item

Ceramic vase hand-painted, design by Aldo LONDI for Bitossi, rimini Blue series. ORIGIN Italy PERIOD 1950s/60s AUTHOR Aldo LONDI Born in Montelupo Fiorentino in 1911, he began working at a local ceramics factory at a very young age. After completing his apprenticeship he served at the Montelupese factory 'Ceramiche Artistiche F.lli Fanciullacci' until 1935, when he moved to the 'Bitossi Ceramiche' factory. At the end of World War II, after spending a long period of imprisonment in South Africa, where he set up a primitive kiln, he returned to Italy and resumed work for 'Bitossi,' where he remained until 1976, occasionally frequenting it even after he retired. In 1946, he was appointed artistic director of the manufacture and, faithful to a serial conception of the ceramic product, he started a production of highly creative and modern furnishing objects. His works for the 'Bitossi' manufactory have participated in many important exhibitions in the field including the Prague and Dusseldorf fairs, the Milan Triennale, the International Competition of Contemporary Ceramics in Faenza, and the Biennial of Ceramic Art in Sesto Fiorentino. He left the management of the manufactory in 1976. Proof of the high level of quality achieved lies in the fact that numerous works designed and made by Aldo Londi for the 'Bitossi' manufactory, since the 1970s called 'Flavia Ceramics,' are marketed by 'Studio Rosenthal' worldwide. Aldo Londi died in Montelupo Fiorentino in 2003. MARK BITOSSI MATERIALS Ceramics and glaze DIMENSIONS Height:- 15cm Ø 11 cm CONDITIONS Perfette. Evaluate through the attached photos. About Bitossi (Manufacturer) Like a Fellini movie, the ceramics of this famed Italian company embody a creative spectrum that ranges from the playful and earthy to the high-minded and provocative. Based in Florence, Bitossi Ceramiche draws on craft traditions that date back to the 1500s. These find expression in the artisanal vases and animal figures by the firm’s longtime art director Aldo Londi, as well as the colorful, totemic vessels designed by the high priest of postmodernism, Ettore Sottsass. The company was incorporated by Guido Bitossi in 1921, though the family began making art pottery in the mid-19th century. In the 1930s, Londi came aboard, bringing with him a mindset that respected time-honored craft, yet looked also to the future. On the one hand, Londi’s perspective fostered the making of Bitossi’s popular whimsical animal figures, hand-shaped and -carved and finished in a rich azure glaze known as “Rimini Blue.” But with his other hand, Londi reached out to thoughtful, experimental designers such as Sottsass. Starting in the 1950s, some 20 years before he founded the Memphis Postmodern design...
