Glass Vase Cytisus Decoration Lemon Yellow Green Blue Loetz circa 1902 Austria
Located in Klosterneuburg, AT
Austrian Jugendstil glass vase "Cytisus Lemon Yellow" decoration Johann Loetz Witwe yellow green blue circa 1902 The “Cytisus” decoration is certainly one of the most exquisite decor variations created by the Loetz glassworks. With its shimmering gold particles, it reflects the secessionist ornamentation of turn-of-the-century Vienna. In this way, Max Ritter von Spaun and his collaborators proved that they had their finger on the artistic and aesthetic pulse of the times. Executed in the form of a reduced flower calyx with five indentations in the wall and a five-pass distorted mouth, this vase fits into the style of production around 1902. The fused crumbled dots seem to float on the vase like lightweight gold particles. The complex decoration as well as the technically elaborate glass body are evidence of the great mastery of the glassblowers in Klostermühle and show why the Johann Loetz Witwe glass manufactory was one of the leading producers of precious luxury glass in Vienna 1900. Gorgeous Art Nouveau Vase of very rare shape Made by Loetz (Lötz) Widow Klostermuehle Bohemia, circa 1900 Decor: amber-orange colored type of Papillon Form: round as well as bellied body with scalloped mouth and silver plated mounting Gorgeous glass item with vertical ribbings on surface, running from edge of mouth to area below. This vase's mouth is of irregular form, having extremely scalloped edge causing this vase's very special appearance. The decor is quite rare type of Papillon - amber-orange shaded and blue-golden shining due to its stunning iridescence ! Finally, this vase's round hollow body is attached to high holder which seems to have been manufactured especially for this glass item: It is a silver plated mounting made of pewter: This one has three arms at top area, holding the vase / the Stand is three-sided, excellently decorated with floral ornaments of reticulated type - most probably these are lady slipper orchids...

Petite Loetz Glass Vase circa 1901 Austrian Jugendstil Blue Green Purple
Located in Klosterneuburg, AT
Glass vase manufactured by Johann Loetz Witwe PG 1/158 decoration ca. 1901 Austrian Jugendstil This vase is an excellently preserved and exquisite specimen, which illustrates the high art of glassblowing from the manufacturer Loetz. The decoration from the Phenomen Genre family is characterized mainly by the contrasting and matte iridescence, which show new qualities in their color gradient with each incidence of light. The veined and irregularly warped bands with their slightly silvery shimmer are particularly striking. What is exciting is that especially the decoration “PG 1/158” – originally composed of two different decorations – unfolds completely new on each form and thus gives each shape of vase something unique. Through the use of the base in the color green in combination with the different curvatures and indents of this filigree vase...

Glass Vase with a Snake Loetz Bohemian circa 1903 Iridescent Yellow Green
Located in Klosterneuburg, AT
Tall glass vase with a snake application by Bohemian glassworks Johann Loetz Witwe, circa 1903, fully iridescent With its wide variety of shapes and decorations, the Bohemian glass manufacturer Johann Loetz Witwe presented a particularly broad production range of artistic glass objects. In addition, it also made a significant contribution to the international development and presence of Jugendstil glass. The form culture of the Jugendstil movement was also significantly influenced by the rare but equally sophisticated depictions of animal and zoomorphic figures and shapes in glassblowing. This extraordinary vase attracts attention not only by its remarkable size of 13.8?, but also by its expressionist strength in form and design. The “Silberiris” decoration on “Candia”-yellow ground, already popular in the 20th century, covers the entire glass object. The vase, created around 1903, impresses above all with its all-visible shape and the outstandingly crafted depiction of a snake. The sculptural elaboration of the animal, snaking five times around the vase, allows the viewer to experience the artistic glass object anew from every side. The shimmering rainbow colors – especially emphasized by every curve of the snake as well as every indent on the vase’s body – complete the harmonious interplay of shape and decoration to a total work of art. Last but not least, this iridescent antique...

Antique and Vintage Vases for Sale

Whether it’s a Chinese Han dynasty glazed ceramic wine vessel, a work of Murano glass or a hand-painted Scandinavian modern stoneware piece, a fine vase brings a piece of history into your space as much as it adds a sophisticated dynamic.

Like sculptures or paintings, antique and vintage vases are considered works of fine art. Once offered as tributes to ancient rulers, vases continue to be gifted to heads of state today. Over time, decorative porcelain vases have become family heirlooms to be displayed prominently in our homes — loved pieces treasured from generation to generation.

The functional value of vases is well known. They were traditionally utilized as vessels for carrying dry goods or liquids, so some have handles and feature an opening at the top (where they flare back out). While artists have explored wildly sculptural alternatives over time, the most conventional vase shape is characterized by a bulbous base and a body with shoulders where the form curves inward.

Owing to their intrinsic functionality, vases are quite possibly versatile in ways few other art forms can match. They’re typically taller than they are wide. Some have a neck that offers height and is ideal for the stems of cut flowers. To pair with your mid-century modern decor, the right vase will be an elegant receptacle for leafy snake plants on your teak dining table, or, in the case of welcoming guests on your doorstep, a large ceramic floor vase for long tree branches or sticks — perhaps one crafted in the Art Nouveau style — works wonders.

Interior designers include vases of every type, size and style in their projects — be the canvas indoors or outdoors — often introducing a splash of color and a range of textures to an entryway or merely calling attention to nature’s asymmetries by bringing more organically shaped decorative objects into a home.

On 1stDibs, you can browse our collection of vases by material, including ceramic, glass, porcelain and more. Sizes range from tiny bud vases to massive statement pieces and every size in between.
