About the Item

This early 20th-century French faience jardinière was crafted in Desvres, a town in northern France celebrated for its vibrant ceramic production since the 18th century. Oval in shape and resting on integrated bracket feet, the jardinière is richly decorated with hand-painted scrollwork, floral garlands, and fluted panels in a striking polychrome palette of cobalt blue, soft green, rose, and ochre. At each end, molded handles take the form of stylized volutes or mask faces, adding sculptural flair and symmetry to the design. The piece is glazed inside and bears hand-painted numerals on the underside, a hallmark of traditional Desvres workshop inventory practice. Desvres became a major center for faience in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with renowned ateliers such as Fourmaintraux and Martel reviving earlier Rouen-inspired motifs while developing their own regional style, ornate, colorful, and deeply rooted in French ceramic tradition. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use. A charming decorative centerpiece for a console, buffet, or dining table. 16”W x 8.75”D x 5.5”H
