About the Item

Ceramic vase enameled, design by Guido ANDLOVITZ for LAVENIA Italian Ceramic Society ORIGIN Laveno PERIOD 1930s DESIGNER Guido ANDLOVIZ was born in Trieste in 1900 and was one of the most significant figures in 20th-century Italian ceramic design. After spending his youth in Florence during World War I, he moved to Milan, where he studied at the Brera Academy and graduated in architecture at the Politecnico under Piero Portaluppi. His career took a decisive turn in 1923, when he began working with the Italian Ceramic Society in Laveno, at the invitation of Portaluppi himself. In this context, Andloviz soon became art director and spearheaded a major stylistic transformation of ceramic production, introducing a modern, essential design with a focus on functionality. Influenced by the European avant-gardes-particularly the German Werkbund, the Vienna Secession, and Futurism-Andloviz combined formal rigor and decorative sensibility, often also drawing inspiration from motifs of the Lombard tradition. His works, such as the famous globular vase Model 1316 (1936), are now considered masterpieces of Italian industrial design. He participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Monza Biennale and the Milan Triennale, where he received wide acclaim. He continued to work in the field of design until the 1960s, leaving a lasting imprint on the world of ceramics and industrial design. He died in Grado in 1971. MARK The Società Ceramica Italiana (S.C.I.) of Laveno Mombello was founded in 1856 on Lake Maggiore, initially specializing in everyday earthenware. Growing rapidly, it took on its final name in 1883 and was distinguished by the quality and innovation of its production. During the twentieth century, the manufactory embarked on a major transformation. The facilities were modernized and a more contemporary style was established, thanks in part to the plant designed by architect Piero Portaluppi. In 1925, the LAVENIA brand was born, intended to distinguish the most aesthetically and stylistically refined lines of ceramics. A key moment was the arrival of Guido ANDLOVIZ, who as art director introduced a modern, linear and functional design. Its pure forms and innovative decors-such as Vecchia Milano and Lago Maggiore-propelled Lavenia to the center of the Italian and international industrial design debate. In the 1930s the manufactory experienced its artistic peak, distinguishing itself in exhibitions and trade fairs. Pottery was also joined by porcelain production with the opening of the Verbano factory. In 1965 S.C.I. merged with Richard-Ginori. After ups and downs in the industry, the business finally ceased operations in 1997. Today, the memory of Lavenia's production survives thanks to the MIDeC museum in Laveno, which holds an extensive collection of works.
