About the Item

Unusually dramatic and flamboyant, this is one of the most distinctive engraved Art Deco vases we have seen by Vicke Lindstrand, who returned again and again to the theme of male divers deep underwater, sometimes in pursuit of a shark. This piece exemplifies the extraordinary engraved glass perfected by Orrefors in the 1930s, designed by the company's leading designer just before he moved to the Uppsala-Ekeby firm in 1940. As Alistair Duncan points out in his definitive book on Orrefors, Lindstrand developed a line of thick-walled crystal glass at the company and decorated them with a series of quintessentially Art Deco engraved figures. Some of these pieces, such as this example, have undulating inner walls, giving the impression of a figure underwater.
