About the Item

This is an old, large Shigaraki ware pot made in Japan. It is estimated to have been produced in the late Edo period, around the 18th century. Among traditional Japanese ceramics, Shigaraki ware is highly valued for its simple yet powerful forms and beautiful scenery created by natural glaze. This piece is a typical example of this style. Shigaraki ware is one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, and it has been handed down from the Middle Ages to the present day. Among these, the pre-Edo period pieces known as “Koshigaraki” are considered to be especially attractive because of the accidental expressions created by the action of natural flame and ash, and are of extremely high artistic value. It is said that this jar was originally used to preserve tea leaves. The inside of the jar bears faint traces of its use, quietly suggesting the life of the time. The centuries of use, storage, and nurturing in a harsh environment have carved deep views and layers of time into the clay surface. The natural gradation from black to reddish-brown in the firing process and the texture of the fine stone grains that are raised, are condensed “ancient beauty” that cannot be reproduced in the modern age. The fact that there are no cracks and the vase is in excellent condition is also a major attraction of this vase. Although it cannot be filled directly with water, it can be used as a vase by using an inner container. In a contemporary space, it can be a piece of art with a quiet presence that enhances its surroundings. This vase is imbued with the spirit of "wabi-sabi. The beauty of imperfection and the acceptance of the passage of time create a serene space. Mouth diameter of the jar: approx. 140 mm Weight: 10 kg
