Keramis, Charles Catteau, Stoneware Vase, 1920

About

Stoneware vase made at Keramis studio (Boch Freres) directed by Charles Catteau, La Louviere, Belgium, 1920. Slip-cast form. Decoration with printed contours filled in with matte watery green and yellowish glazes (blended) and glossy beige and bottle-green glazes on a cream ground. Frieze on the shoulder applied by means of pouncing (glazes: glossy bottle-green). Foot and neck finished with an undulating beige band decorated with bottle-green dots. Neck and foot connected to one another by six groups of three green lines (twenty-four lines to the neck), interrupted on the shoulder by a frieze of plant motifs, outlined with undulating bands decorated with dots. The frieze itself is interrupted three times by a medallion with a serrated edge surrounding a stylised cockerel. Play of superimposed matte glazes, creating a marbled effect in some places. Form number 886, impressed. Decoration number: D.635 in blue. Marks: Grès - Keramis in blue.
