About the Item

This large 2-handle pot, hand-thrown in Grottaglie, Puglia, dates back to the early-to-mid 1800s. Crafted from ceramic, it was originally used as a domestic confit pot for preserving foods in olive oil. The pot’s partial glazing, found internally and around the top edge, was designed for hygiene while being economically practical, as glazing the entire surface was costly at the time. A beautifully preserved piece of rural Italian pottery, this large pot boasts a unique green glaze, highlighting its historical charm. The pot would have been sealed with a linen cloth or wooden lid and its contents ladled out, a testament to its utilitarian origins. Its handmade construction makes each piece unique, with slight variations in the glaze and form.
