About the Item
Large Colima Redware Pottery Jar, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE–300 CE
This elegant ancient vessel is a classic example of Colima redware, crafted in West Mexico between 300 BCE and 300 CE. Featuring a bulbous “globular” form that tapers gracefully to a narrow neck and flared rim, the jar is fully burnished for a soft sheen and left unfired in select areas, allowing natural fire-darkening to remain—a mark of its kiln-firing technique and antiquity.
A band of impressed diagonal dashes encircles the rim, a decorative technique seen across fine Colima ceramics. Signs of surface wear, a minor rim chip, and natural dark-toned patches add authenticity and tell the story of its ancient use and kiln exposure.
This jar—once part of an Iowa-based private collection—now offers discerning collectors a striking example of Pre-Columbian artistry and E-Zero provenance (item has clean, verifiable, legal provenance), checked and ready for continued appreciation in a modern collection or exhibition.
