About the Item

Lee Rosen for Design Technics Incised and Slip Decorated Abstract Design Vase, ca 1950s This is a gorgeous and unique Design Technics vase by Lee Rosen that features a biomorphic shape and abstract decor. Could it be fish? It doesn't really matter as it is so fantastic. I particularly like the older DT pieces with the slip decoration as you see in this piece. Perfect for the collector, decorator, or anyone decorating their own home with beautiful decorative items. The glaze is brown and a tan, with a slight green cast to the color. Note that I have included images with the overhead lights on and off. The ones with the lights on show some glare on the glaze but do show the color more realistically, while the ones without the overhead light shows the item without glare. As you can see the vase is in superb vintage condition with no cracks or chips. Some light white specks that appear to be from production but they are only seen at very close view. Also, as is common with thrown and hand-painted pottery there are some natural imperfections that add to the beauty and history of the vase. The vase measures 10" high, 7 1/2" wide and 5 1/2" deep. The hand-crafted art produced by this small nationally known firm included not only large decorative wall tiles but also giftware such, ashtrays, vases, bon-bon dishes and jam jars. Corning Glass and Union Carbide were among the businesses that displayed the smaller decorative items in their offices. During its heyday, the Design Technics also sold pieces to architects and builders. The company's products helped to enhance the interior of the Eastern Airlines building at Kennedy International Airport and the Banco Populaire in Puerto Rico. Other Design Technics projects included those at Piggly-Wiggly supermarkets in Wisconsin and, locally, an outdoor space divider in Taminment. Founded in Greenwich Village, New York, as a craft and design shop in 1940 by husband and wife team of Sam and Lee Rosen, the fledgling company specialized in tiles and lamps. Also offered were classes in a variety of media: metals, weaving, enameling and, of course, ceramics. With Lee as the chief designer, the company continued to grow, opening shop in Syndersville, (Pennsylvania). Source: Pocono Record

The glass is a deep purple color (eggplant or wine) cased with white glass sandwiched with a pink/clear glass on the interior.
