Pair of Early Georg Jensen Danish Modern Sterling Silver Princess Bowls

About the Item

Pair of Danish Modern sterling silver compotes. Made by Georg Jensen in Copenhagen. Each: Wide and curved bowl and stepped foot. Open shaft in form of imbricated leaves and scrolls surrounding central seed pod. Stylized nature motifs with industrial-style ball-bearing beading. Early pieces in the design conceived by Johan Rohde in 1917 that is sometimes referred to as the “Princess Bowl”. Engraved presentations: “Dorothy Moody Barclay from Hugh Barclay Christmas 1937” and “To Mother from Douglas Christmas 1937”. A very nice Christmas it must have been in the Barclay home that year, when Dorothy received one compote from husband Hugh and the other from son Douglas. Hugh was a decorated military veteran. He served as company commander in France during World War I. During World War II he held a range of posts starting with the Lend Lease Program and ending as supply line troubleshooter at the Battle of the Bulge. In peacetime, the Barclays lived at Dorothy’s family’s estate in rural New York, where Hugh applied his considerable administrative skills to cattle breeding, achieving distinction with mention in The Dairymen’s League News. Evidently, a dedication to livestock did not preclude a taste for contemporary Scandinavian design. Fully marked including maker’s stamp (1925-32), designer’s stamp, and no. 252.
