Baroque Meissen Porcelain Group Four Children Playing Music, J.J. Kaendler, 1770

About the Item

Excellent Meissen piece from the time the model was created: Four children in festive rural rococo clothing on a high, tiered round base, decorated with a leaf wreath and ribbon festoon with gold decoration, on the base further pedestals of different shapes and heights, on which the children are placed and make music, at the top the hurdy-gurdy player, flanked by a flute player and horn blower , behind her the guitarist, between the musicians on the floor a violin, music books, tricorne hats, and a lemonade bottle. Designed by JOHANN JOACHIM KAENDLER (1706 - 1775): chief sculptor at the Meissen manufactory from 1742 to 1775. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created famous series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer) , Gallant Figurines, etc. Kaendler designed this model circa 1767.
