About the Item

Very Fine Rare 19th Century DOULTON Cobalt Blue with Gold Leaf overlay large floral Centerpiece - Footed Punchbowl in excellent condition. Manufactured when Doulton was in Burslem, England. This piece pre-dates the 1901 Royal Doulton trademark when the firm was under the leadership of founder John Doulton's son Sir Henry Doulton. In 1815 John Doulton invested his life savings in a small London pottery operation which grew to become a leading manufacturer of innovative fine tableware. His collaborated from the beginning with artists and designers, focusing on education and empowering women in the workplace. Originally in London the factory moved to Lambeth and then in 1882 it opened in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent in the center of English pottery. From the start, the backbone of the business was stonewares. From 1853 to 1902 wares were marked Doulton & Co. In 1901, when a royal warrant was given the mark Royal Doulton was used. In 1877 John Doulton's son Sir Henry Doulton was the first potter in history to be awarded the knighthood. Royal Doulton pottery lives on today, most highly regarded for exceptional quality, craftsmanship and artistic integrity. This Cobalt Blue with Gold Leaf overlay is a rare gem from the late 19th century in excellent condition. The coblat blue floral design transfer on white with a gold leaf overlay is a wonderful rich composition finely crafted with the skill and integrity for which Doulton is internationally regarded. Marked "Doulton Burslem England" places the piece before 1901. Comparisons place the manufacture date to be 1885. The piece has no cracks or chips. Size is 8.25 inches tall and 14.5 inches in diameter.
