About the Item

Vintage ceramic ewer-shaped bud vase was made by Gonder Pottery in Zanesville, Ohio. The vase has highly sculptural, characteristic mid-century modern shape with graphic handle that is accentuated by complex light grey glaze with light blue drip glaze accent. The interior of the vase is glazed in pink color. The vase is signed with raised Gonder USA script mark, the second oldest Gonder mark. It is done in modified cursive script; the script mark emphasizes the long tail of the letter G and also adds a similar tail to the letter d. Gonder Pottery operated from 1941 to 1957; from 1946 to 1954, Gonder also operated the Elgee Pottery, which made ceramic lamp bases. Gonder made high-grade pottery decorated with flambe, drip, gold crackle, and Chinese crackle glazes. We are offering a similar Gonder vases in the same shape, but in blue and chartreuse colors, in separate listings.

Franciscan by Gladding McBean El Patio Jug Carafe w/ Lid, Sea Mist Green 1930s
By Gladding, McBean, Franciscan China 1
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage Art deco style carafe or jug with lid features simple, clean design, the iconic “pretzel” shaped cup handle, and high gloss turquoise glaze. It's a part of El Patio line, attributed to Mary Grant, the first dinnerware line produced by Gladding McBean under their Franciscan Pottery division in 1934. The glaze color, Glacial Blue, is one of the first 8 glaze colorways for the line. El Patio line had three versions of the carafe – one with a wooden handle, one with a ceramic handle, and another with a metal holder; this carafe has the build-in ceramic handle, resulting in streamlined, monochromatic look. The carafe is marked on the bottom with the oval GMCB mark that was in use from 1934 to 1938. The mark dates the piece to the earliest years of the production of El Patio, one of the five most important California solid colored dinnerware lines of the 1930s, alongside Pacific Hostessware, Bauer Ringware, Metlox 200 Series, and Vernon Kilns Early California. The Gladding, McBean & Company, one of the biggest potteries in Southern California, was founded in 1875 in Lincoln, California. In 1934 the company began the manufacture of dinnerware and art ware under the trade name Franciscan Ware...

Douglas Ferguson for Pigeon Forge Crater Glaze Bud Vase, American Studio Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage hand-thrown vase features complex Crater glaze in off-white and espresso brown colors. Minimal color palette and streamlined shape of the piece allow the textured glaze with variations from semi-matte to high gloss to take the spotlight; slightly asymmetrical rim adds hand-crafted, Organic Modern mood to the vase design. The vase is personally signed by Douglas Ferguson on the bottom with his name and "Pigeon Forge Pottery Tenn". The Crater glaze has become one of the most recognizable glazes made by the Pigeon Forge Pottery. Often commonly referred to as "Volcanic" or "Lava" glaze, the Crater glaze was developed and made in several colors. We are offering a vase and 4 more bowls in different shapes by Douglas Ferguson, done in variations of Crater glazes, in separate listings. Douglas Ferguson (1912-1999) was an established Tennessee pottery artist; he received a degree in Art Design Studies from Mars Hill College and worked in the Ceramic Research Laboratory for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris, TN, from 1935 to 1947, where he experimented with local clays. In 1946 he started Pigeon Forge Pottery in an old tobacco barn with his wife Ruth and Ernest Wilson, his colleague at the Ceramic Research Laboratory. He formulated many of his own glazes, including crystalline and Crater glaze. In 1957 he created the Clingman Dome tea set, named by Ferguson for the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, which the state of Tennessee presented to Queen Elizabeth. Ferguson became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1948 and remained active until 1998, receiving Life Membership in 1991. He earned two awards from the Tennessee Arts and Crafts Festival in Nashville, received the Rotary Certificate of Distinguished Service, and was featured in books on Appalachian...
