This is an Ironstone Tureen, complete with lid, made by Mason's of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, during the early part of the 19th century, circa 1825 to 1840.
This is a rare shape piece in a rare pattern.
This tureen and its lid are well potted in a circular shape with moulded handles to the base. The lid has a top knop or knob shapes as a flower head.
This is a listed pattern, probably printed initially, then hand painted. The pattern is called "Fence, prunus and Plantain" and is a detailed chinoiserie Mason's pattern, as illustrated on page 96 in The Mason's collectors Club book " A Guide to Mason's patent Ironstone patterns, circa 1813-circa 1848".
Both the base and the lid are marked with one of Mason's rarer recorded stating Fenton Stone Works...

Inspired by rock formation, Fragments is a collection of porcelain vases, the largest yet produced by the duo. Each porcelain vase is made using traditional slip casting technique, where liquid clay in poured into a plaster mould and allowed to form a layer before the excess liquid is poured out. The surface is then hand carved following the faceted form of the vase making each vase completely unique. This is a very rare ironstone vase, in the Chinese style, all hand painted in the coloured dragon pattern, made by the Mason's factory in the early 19th century.
Both the vase shape and the pattern are very rare.
The vase has a bottle shape with a fairly tall neck, having two dolphin head handles, with attached loops.
(NOTES ON SHAPE
This vase style is a copy of a much earlier Chinese bronze vase shape produced in the Ming, Hongwu period of 1368 - 1398, which had similar decorative animal head side handles with loops. ( See the book Chinese Ceramics by He Li, page 216, published by Thames & Hudson. ).
Also On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 204;
The square handles and rings illustrate the metal origins of the shape of the vase. Similar examples have been excavated in Chinese tombs dating to the fifteenth and sixteenth century, suggesting that the shape was particularly popular at that time.)
