About the Item
A stunning art deco German pewter mounted stoneware bird decorated jug made by Reinhold Merkelbach of Grenzhausen and dating from around 1930. The bulbous shaped jug stands on a narrow rounded unglazed foot and is molded in low relief with a wading bird perched on a rock on a seashore with stylized wave designs believed to represent the sea. The designs are natural glazed using the grey of the underlying pottery and contrast against a richly glazed cobalt blue ground. The jug is fitted with a hinged pewter cover with raised thumb rest and attached to a molded loop handle and has impressed makers marks to the base including artist marks.
