About the Item
Signed Steinschönau armorial glass, milk glass effect vase with finely enamelled floral décor, depicting the arms of the local regional capital Decin -an important town in then Bohemia, close to the German border - The shield depicts a stylised lion holding a fish, it sits below an armoured helmet surrounded by swags of seaweed like vegetation. Made between 1905-1914, it is just under 12 inches tall. Signed for the KK Fachschule Steinschönau, and with “M” designer for Prof. Hugo Max and initialled for painter “ME”.
The Steinschönau Glass school is now called Kamenický Šenov it is, and has been for centuries, probably the greatest ever glass school -as with many glass schools to help with funding the professors would design glass items to be decorated by the student and then usually sold or in this case probably presented to local dignitaries.
