About the Item

Small, striped glass carafe by Gio Ponti for Venini. This is an ‘A Canne’ or caned glass carafe or pitcher. It was produced in Italy at the Venini glass factory. In 1921 Venini and Cappellin opened a glass factory called Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C. on the islands of Murano, the historic glass production centre in the lagoon of Venice, Italy. This piece is believed to have been produced in the 1950s. It measures 6.5 inches in diameter at the widest part and 8 inches high. It was hand blown and consists of clear glass with teal and taupe colored stripes. The upper portion, or rim, has a V shaped spout. The neck then compresses a ball shape to form the body. The base has a polished or ground pontil. Apparently unmarked and a very rare piece from a line of glass that also featured decanters, glasses and vases. This piece is referenced in Leslie Pina’s book, “Circa Fifties Glass” from Europe & America, page 54.
