About the Item

Superbly sculpted, cast, chased and patinated, this remarkable tangle of nude male and female figures, all swirling around the central figure of Neptune with his upraised trident, is a tour de force example of late 19th century French sculpture. Neptune, confident and virile atop his horse and dominating the nude male figure below, is framed on all sides by nude figures that are wrestling, battling or lovemaking. Each and every figure is depicted in exacting detail, and exudes energy and sensuality in equal measure.

"Mermaid with Dolphins & Starfish", Rare & Ambitious Art Deco Platter, Mequinion
By Roger Mequinion
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large and bold, this Art Deco ceramic platter featuring a mermaid trumpeting a shell and embracing a dolphin while another dolphin and starfish are cavorting in the water nearby, was made Roger Mequinion, who produced an entirely unique series of ceramic pieces with thick layers of glaze that he sandblasted to create a layered, three-dimensional design. Here, the outer glaze is a deep red color, but the sandblasting reveals layers of light red and white underneath. Mequinion was the first sculptor to work for René Lalique, and helped the master develop a sandblasting technique for his early glass...
