Mathilde Schaefer Modern Studio Pot with Horse Motif
By Mathilde Schaefer
Located in Phoenix, AZ
Beautiful and whimsical ceramic vase handmade by celebrated artist Mathilde Schaefer, wife of noted Arizona artist Lew Davis. This unusual and rare terra cotta vase with a glazed turquoise interior (and other glazed portions: manes, tails, hooves and eyes), is dated 1949 on the bottom in pencil and marked "Desert Kilns Arizona." Also inscribed in pencil on the bottom: “Merry Christmas from Bill Benton.” We are not certain who the recipient was but the vase was owned and given as a gift by Bill Benton, a Senator from Connecticut who wintered in Arizona. He was a friend of Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s when Arizona and Phoenix in particular had a very active art community. Known in Arizona in the 1960s as an instructor of pottery and sculpture at the Desert School of Art in Scottsdale and also as the wife of artist Lew Davis, she was born in New York City and studied with Raoul Josset and Walter Lemcke. In 1938, she began exhibiting at the Art Institute of Chicago. She married Davis and they moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where she maintained a studio. Her sculpture is in numerous collections including that of International Business Machines...

Vintage Wmf Red, Orange, White Black Glass and Chrome Sphere Table or Desk Lamp
Located in North Miami, FL
This stunning and artful Art Deco original vintage glass lamp is from the fine and noted German metal company of WMF whose span of decades of business has produced top line pieces in many mediums. It is red glass with swirls and veining of black set against the red sphere ball. It becomes a sea of orange red with hints of amber amoebas floating on and off when it is lite. It is an early one all with original but newly nickeled silver hardware. It has been fully rewired and restored for United States sockets and use. The bulb is on the inside and has the two part socket with the round turn off /on switch. When lite, the most amazing beautiful sculptural glow, color and forms take shape inside almost like sea creatures from the water. The glass portion alone is 12" H x 13" D. Sorry the photos do not do justice to show you the on presentation of gorgeous light and forms. This now just needs a great white drum shade. It is of the period of the 1930s but looks so modern. This is unusual, sculptural and artistic from the time period yet remains modern looking. It makes a great table or side lamp with sculptural internal forms when it is lite. This is a beauty. When it is on at night, the forms are amazing with great color. It is also just beautiful just turned off. It does not seem Art Deco but very modern looking now. This is a sexy lamp...
