About the Item

An extremely rare and probably unique, tall grotesque figural ewer or spoon/ladle warmer by Robert Wallace Martin for the Martin Brothers dated 1880. The stoneware ewer is of tall cylindrical shape and is modelled as a fanciful animal seated upright on its hind legs and with its front paws by its side. The animal has a wide gaping mouth with shaped nostrils , bulging eyes and small raised ears. A large tail forms a loop handle. The body is incised to simulate fur and the ewer is glazed in ochre with brown oxide and black highlights. The ewer has incised is signed marked to the base including the date 5.3.80. Provenance: Acquired directly from a private American collection. Sale; Sotheby's New York, The Harriman Judd Collection Part Two, Saturday October 6, 2001, lot 150. One of the ears has been chipped and professionally restored with the original elements and the ewer is in excellent presentable condition.
