George III "Bell" Sugar Basket Made in London by Robert Sharp, 1798
About the Item
A rare George III "Bell" Sugar Basket made in London in 1798 by Robert Sharp.
The Basket stands on a stepped circular foot decorated with gadrooning. The main body is modelled in an unusual "Bell" form and is decorated with a wide band of lobing on the lower section. The sides rise to a reeded rim and gilded interior. The handle is decoarted with reeding and the front is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a cartouche of drapery mantling. The basket is of the finest quality with a very good weight. This piece is fully marked on the foot and with the sterling mark on the handle. This is a design which was peculiar to Robert Sharp, however very few examples exist.
