American Historical Presidential Presentation Plate/Charger George Washington

About the Item

An Incredibly Rare and Quite Important American Historical Presidential Presentation Plate/Charger of George Washington and other US Presidents by Hutschenreuther. Manufactured by Hutschenreuther in Hohenberg, Bavaria, this porcelain presentation piece is marked on the reverse with the factory’s green printed seal and the dates 1814–1914, indicating centennial production. The reverse also features the names of ten individuals inscribed in red script, including George Washington, John Holsman, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. The underside has a recessed foot ring and a circular indentation near the center, with a smooth white glazed surface. The plate features a central rectangular reserve with a hand-painted portrait of George Washington standing in interior surroundings, bordered by a raised gilt frame with alternating heart-shaped and triangular patterns. The cobalt blue ground is richly decorated with tooled and raised gilt scrollwork and foliate detailing, including a prominent American eagle motif at the bottom, bearing a banner inscribed “E Pluribus Unum.” Encircling the rim are eight oval medallions, each with a hand-painted portrait of an American president: Abraham Lincoln, shown with a beard and bowtie; Andrew Jackson, with curled hair and dark coat; James Madison, with full white hair and cravat; Thomas Jefferson, with lighter curls and a composed expression; John Adams, in powdered wig and dark garments; John Quincy Adams, with tightly curled white hair and high-collared attire; James Monroe, with rounded facial features and parted hair; and John Holsman, shown with youthful features and contemporary clothing. Each medallion is bordered with a raised gilt laurel wreath. Its commemorative theme, extensive portraiture, and high level of decoration suggest limited production, possibly for diplomatic or centennial presentation purposes. Hutschenreuther was known for producing such items using high-fire enamel on fine porcelain, with custom painting carried out by specialist decorators. The inclusion of ten presidential portraits, rendered with individual likenesses, further underscores its rarity among continental porcelain with American historical subjects. Germany, Circa: 1914 At 13.75" inches in diameter, great size Charger. In mint pristine condition, most probably displayed behind glass cabinet most of its life.
