Early 20th Century William Guérin Limoges Hand-Painted Porcelain Portrait Vase

About the Item

This outstanding porcelain vase was manufactured by the French firm of William Guérin & Cie in the early 1900’s in the Limoges district of France. The factory operated until 1932. Underneath the vase is the traditional monogram used by the Guérin factory as well as an additional mark which reads partially as “COUVENT DES _______________ MONTREAL”. Guerin produced lot of "white ware," or "blanks," meaning that these pieces had no decoration. They were exported, primarily but not exclusively to the United States, where amateur china painters and professional decorating companies such as Pickard and Stouffer of Chicago bought them to add their own hand-painted designs. The green mark with the word FRANCE in it indicates that this piece would have been exported as a blank.. The other mark can probably be attributed to the decorator - in this case, a convent in the Montreal area. And this is certainly not inconceivable. In fact, Schiller Publishing, noted for their “Schiller Book for Collectors” series, produced in their book “Antique Limoges at Home” an image of a Limoges vase decorated in a very similar style to our vase with a decorator’s mark attributed to a convent located in Valleyfield, Quebec, not far from Montreal! The latter was painted in 1920-1930’s. The style used by these convents is almost identical to that used by the Stouffer Studios of Chicago. What makes this vase stand out as a rare item is first of all, its unique and graceful shape flanked by beautiful flowing handles, second, the magnificent hand-painted decoration in the Art Nouveau style featuring two virtuous women of unparalleled beauty, and third, the flawless attention to detail and precision. This vase is of the highest quality and not too many can match it. It is truly in a class of its own. Except for a minor inclusion caused during production, it is in near pristine condition.
