Fine Large Late 18th - Early 19th Century Meissen Porcelain Model of a Swan

About the Item

A fine, exceptionally detailed large Meissen model of a swan, modelled by J. J. Kändler, with incised plumage, the feathers of the wings picked out in soft grey and beige, with russet brown eyes and apricot tone beak. The mouth slightly ajar in a laughing pose. Crossed swords mark in light blue with incised letters References: Sotheby's London, May 1, 2013- for a similar model with dating to 1773 and the catalogue note referencing one of the last entries in Kändler's work records from December 1773 reads: translated- A large tureen in the form of a swan created and modelled. It is this tureen of modest size that the swan is seated and is looking around with much liveliness, slightly closing his wings from his body downwards, which finely covers the junction of the vessel, at the manufactory... a similar pair on a table facing each other, both necks modelled thereto. Condition: Very Good, showing age and size appropriate fire cracks which occurred during the firing process in the kiln, particularly in the large scale pieces in which keeping a consistent temperature throughout the firing process proved to be especially challenging. Almost all large early Meissen pieces exhibit fire cracks which are considered a sign of age. 14.25 inches high 13.5 inches long 9.25 inches wide.
