About the Item

A Pair of 19th Century Meissen Porcelain Models of Swans, After J.J. Kandler. The models are based on designs by Johann Joachim Kandler, the chief modeler at Meissen in the mid-18th century, whose work played a significant role in establishing the manufacturer’s reputation for naturalistic porcelain sculpture. The swans are presented in lifelike poses with curved necks, partially extended wings, and raised tail feathers. Their bodies are predominantly white with fine incised feather patterns throughout. The heads feature painted details, including black markings around the eyes and an orange-tinted beak with additional black accents. The feet are rendered in dark tones and integrated into the base. The bases are shaped to resemble naturalistic terrain, featuring sculpted leaves in varying shades of green and yellow. The textured surface of the base incorporates brown and beige tones, simulating earth. The bases are slightly raised, with an irregular form that follows the contours of the swans' bodies. The bottoms of each are marked with blue crossed swords mark. The Meissen porcelain manufacturer, established in 1710 in Germany, is recognized as one of the earliest European producers of hard-paste porcelain. The company developed and refined techniques for creating sculptural porcelain works, often featuring naturalistic and detailed models inspired by designs from its 18th-century sculptors, such as Johann Joachim Kandler. Meissen’s production includes a range of decorative and functional porcelain, often marked with its signature crossed swords insignia.
