Piero Fornasetti Porcelain Cook Pattern Plate, Corfam a La Du Pont, Made for Fleming Joffe, 1967-1974 From a collection of all fourteen different examples made- inquire regarding the others. Piero Fornasetti was commissioned by Fleming Joffe, a hide Company in New York, to make a series of fanciful recipe plates featuring animals that were used to create their high-end hides to give to their top clients. This plate is named Corfam a La Du Pont. A limited number of these plates for promotional purposes and were made for sale. Note very slight rubbing on a couple of the letters. Diameter: 10 1/4 inches x 1 inch high Mark: FLEMING JOFFE LTD./COOK PLATES/ESPECIALLY MADE BY/ then typical Fornasetti mark with pen and brush with Fornasetti. Milano/Made in Italy below Provenance: Collection of Gail Feingarten Oppenheimer. Corfam Wikipedia Poromeric imitation leather Sometimes referred to as poromerics, poromeric imitation leathers are a group of synthetic "breathable" leather substitutes made from a plastic coating (usually a polyurethane) on a fibrous base layer (typically a polyester). The term poromeric was coined by DuPont as a derivative of the terms microporous and polymeric. The first poromeric material was DuPont's ill-fated Corfam introduced in 1963 at the Chicago Shoe Show. Corfam was the centerpiece of the DuPont pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair in New York City. Its major advantages over natural leather were its durability and its high gloss finish that could be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Its disadvantages were its stiffness which did not lessen with wearing, its relative lack of breathability, and easy confusion with non-breathable cheaper products. DuPont manufactured Corfam at its plant in Old Hickory, Tennessee, from 1964 to 1971. After spending millions of dollars marketing the product to shoe manufacturers, DuPont withdrew Corfam from the market in 1971 and sold the rights to a company in Poland. Corfam is still used today in some products, an example being certain types of equestrian saddle girth. Corfam shoes are still popular in uniformed professions where shiny shoes are desirable. The Fleming Joffe company was a small leather goods company in New York. Fornasetti was not the only famous artist this company worked with. Andy Warhol produced ads and copy for them as well as decorating their show booths and showroom. (see below). They also commissioned Ogden Nash to pair his bouncy text with Warhol's drawings. Reference: Fornasetti: The Complete Universe, edited by Barnaba Fornasetti, page 614, #163 for a colour illustration of one of a set of twelve promotional plates made for the Fleming & Joffe company in the early 1970's. Fornasetti writes, Each of the twelve subjects in this series presents a decidedly improbable recipe. There are, in fact, 14 different plates. (Ref: NY9850-B-icl)
