About the Item
One of the most iconic of all the Chelsea shapes, the Goat & Bee jug. This is the item that, more than any other, has been chosen for the front cover of scholarly works on Chelsea, or on English porcelain in general.
Some 300 of these are thought to have been made; far fewer have survived. Dated examples of Goat and Bee jugs exist, with an inscribed date of 1748. They were long thought to be the very earliest examples of English porcelain on this account, though recent researches suggest that Bow was making porcelain a little earlier.
The jug is very much in the style of Nicholas Sprimont's work as a silversmith, something he did before founding the Chelsea porcelain factory. The goat supporters, in particular, feature more than once in surviving silver examples.
