Royal Copenhagen Denmark Bisque Angel Night & Day 2 Round Wall Plaques c. 1970

About the Item

Pair of extra fine Royal Copenhagen bisque porcelain relief plaques fashioned to represent the marble originals by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) of the Angel of Night, with her children, sleep and death; and of the Angel of Day, with the Genius of Light. The set of two plaques in this pristine classical design would make an outstanding and memorable gift this holiday season. Each plaque is 6 inches in diameter and 7/16 inch thick of fine white bisque porcelain produced by Royal Copenhagen of Denmark in 1970. The top of each plaque is pierced for hanging with the Royal Copenhagen seal in blue on the back with the imprint hallmark "Eneret". They are sold as a pair. Royal Copenhagen is the premier producers of the finest in Danish porcelain with a reputation for outstanding quality that dates back to the late 1700s. Their celebrated blue-and-white china patterns as well as their famed hallmark depicting the royal crown and three waves — symbolizing the monarch who founded the company and the three major waterways of Denmark — are known emblems of superior master craftsmanship. Royal Copenhagen was founded in 1775 by Queen Juliane Marie who sought to improve Denmark’s economy by founding factories around the country to promote domestic growth and international trade. Royal Copenhagen was one of the first of these 18th Century artistic enterprises. The company made dinnerware and vases with blue-and-white motifs inspired by Chinese porcelain that was then fashionable throughout aristocratic Europe. In addition to the designs of the neoclassical period, Royal Copenhagen has designed and created works in numerous styles including Rococo, Art Nouveau and modern 20th century Danish. The precise and consistent quality of work and manufacturing has remained internationally admired and respected for 250 years. These are fine examples of Royal Copenhagen's beautiful workmanship in classic white bisque porcelain.
