About the Item
A stylish antique porcelain pastille burner model of Roberts Burn’s Cottage by renowned English potter William Henry Goss (British, 1833-1906) and dated 1893.
William Henry Goss was probably best known for his prolific production of crested china wears which were developed for the souvenir trade however alongside these produced a number of other items which have become highly collectable today.
This finely made pastille burner is modelled as a long single storey cottage with three windows with wooden shutters and a door. The cottage has a thatched roof with two chimney stacks. The cottage is hand painted in tones of brown, black and green and has an opening to the rear to insert a perfumed pastille. The house has printed marks to the back reading ROBERT BURNS THE AYRSHIRE POET WAS BORN ON THE 15TH JANUARY A.D. 1759 DIED 21ST JULY A.D.1796 AGED 37½ YEARS. To the opposite side the cottage has a printed W.H. Goss mark along with MODEL OF BURNS COTTAGE along with a registration mark dating the piece to 1893.
