About the Item

A matched pair of portrait medallions showing the famous actors Mr Garrick (C1830) and Mrs Siddons, (circa 1880). Framed as a pair, they work well together. David Garrick and Sarah Siddons were both prominent figures in the 18th-century theater scene in Britain. David Garrick (1717-1779) was an actor, playwright, theater manager, and producer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of the 18th century. He was born in England and began his career as a theater performer in London. Throughout his career, Garrick became famous for his interpretations of Shakespearean roles, and he is credited with revolutionizing the way that Shakespeare's works were performed. He was also a successful theater manager and producer, and he played a major role in establishing the theater as a respected art form in Britain. Sarah Siddons (1755-1831) was an actress who was born in Wales and became one of the leading actresses of her time. She was best known for her performances in dramatic roles, particularly in plays by William Shakespeare and William Congreve, and she was widely regarded as the greatest tragic actress of her era. Siddons was also known for her distinctive acting style, which was characterized by its emotional intensity and naturalism. She was one of the first actresses to achieve true fame and fortune, and her performances were popular with audiences throughout Britain and beyond. Both Garrick and Siddons left a lasting legacy on the theater, and they continue to be remembered and celebrated for their contributions to the performing arts.
