About the Item

A delightful pair antique Staffordshire pearlware pottery figures of a Sheperd and Shepherdess dating from the early 19th century. The figures stand raised on a rounded hollow base the fronts applied with a small floral design above raised name plates, one bearing the title SHEPERD and other SHEPERDISS in black. The bases have an uneven naturalistic surface hand painted in tones of green and brown. The Sheperd is stands holding a short crock shaped stick and is dressed in a jacket, knee length trousers and a waistcoat with a flat tricorn hat. A dog sits by his side. The Sheperdiss stands wearing s short sleeve blouse and long dress with black shoes and flat round hat. She strokes a young sheep. Both figures are set against a backdrop bocage applied with branches and flowers and both has been hand painted in bright colors with nice detail. The figures are typically not marked. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. Offered in good condition with usual signs of wear associated with age and use. No obvious signs of restoration.
