"Hand Mirror w/ Dolphin Motif, " Rare Art Deco Sterling Silver by Nielsen/Jensen

About the Item

An iconic Art Deco design, crafted in sterling silver by Harald Nielsen for George Jensen -- arguably the most renowned silversmith in the world at the time -- this hand mirror features a sleek, streamlined form and a delightful dolphin form on the reverse side. The overall shape of the mirror is very modern and streamlined, but where the handle joins the round mirror, Nielsen included classic Art Deco geometric motifs -- small spheres and radiating forms. Although Denmark and Sweden provided a nurturing environment for several remarkable silversmiths in the Art Deco period, Jensen was incontestably the most celebrated and successful, and for many years, Nielsen was one of his leading designers. In the 1950s, after Jensen's death, Nielsen was the director of the firm. The mirror is very well marked on its edge.

"Mermaid with Dolphins & Starfish", Rare & Ambitious Art Deco Platter, Mequinion
By Roger Mequinion
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large and bold, this Art Deco ceramic platter featuring a mermaid trumpeting a shell and embracing a dolphin while another dolphin and starfish are cavorting in the water nearby, was made Roger Mequinion, who produced an entirely unique series of ceramic pieces with thick layers of glaze that he sandblasted to create a layered, three-dimensional design. Here, the outer glaze is a deep red color, but the sandblasting reveals layers of light red and white underneath. Mequinion was the first sculptor to work for René Lalique, and helped the master develop a sandblasting technique for his early glass...
