Silver Candy Dish, Egyptian Style, First Empire

About the Item

Early 19th century silver drageoir or candy dish adorned with Egyptian head and on the collar with openwork palmette motifs. On the two spiral handles are suspended two twisted rings. The base is decorated with curving tubular patterns. The removable lid features floral finial. The interior of the candy dish is entirely lined with vermeil. The candy dish is characteristic of the Egyptian style that developed after the return of the Egyptian campaigns of Napoleon the first. With the «Description of Egypt» appears in the decorative arts Egyptian patterns like sphinxes or pharaohs. This style lasts only a short time and is replaced by the Empire style. Weight 880 gr. Measures: H: 24 cm / D 13 cm Silver Marks: Title mark: rooster 1798-1809 Guarantee mark: Man’s head 1809 Master goldsmith’s mark: Jean Pierre Chauvin insculpé in 1803.
