Minton Majolica Wine Ewer Designed by Hugues Protât, English, circa 1875
By Minton
Located in Banner Elk, NC
A Minton Majolica Wine Ewer Designed by Hugues Protât (active 1835-90), English, ca. 1875, the body molded as a wine barrel with grape vines to the center, surmounted by four Bacchanalian cherubs, with a Renaissance-style shaped and scrolled spout; the entire piece from the pedestal to the spout is entwined with purple-glazed grapes and green leaves with tendrils, the handle formed by overlapping vines; the reverse with impressed marks, 'MINTONS' and design number '900,' which corresponds to 'Barrel Jug with Cupids (M)' as recorded in the Minton Majolica Ornamental Shape and Design books and partially reprinted in Bergesen.
BOOK REFERENCES:
Victoria Bergesen, MAJOLICA: British, Continental, and American Wares. London: Barrie & Jenkins, 1989, p. 181. Minton Ornamental Shapes (i.e., design numbers) listed in Appendix D, pp. 180-182.

Rare Victorian Sterling Silver Squirrel Condiment Set
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare antique Victorian English cast sterling silver three piece condiment set in the form of squirrels; an addition to our silver cruets/condiments collection
This exceptional and rare antique Victorian English cast sterling silver condiment set consists of a mustard pot and a pair of peppers.
The components of this magnificent set have been realistically modelled in the form of squirrels eating nuts.
Each substantial piece is ornamented with details reproducing the squirrel's fur and anatomical features.
The fine mustard pot is fitted the original hallmarked flush hinged cover, incorporating the rodent's arms and head, and retains the original gilding to the interior; the flush hinge and gilding indicates the high quality of the piece.
The decoration to each squirrel pepper incorporates an array of pierced 'pepper' holes to the upper portion.
The underside of each pepperette is fitted with a hinged hallmarked push fit cover.
The base of each piece bears the retailer's mark 'Jones 41 St James's St & 23 B Des Capucine, Paris'.
The magnificent condiment set will have been crafted in the same year, but due to the hallmarking system the mustard pot is struck with the date letter 'C' and the pepperettes bear the date letter 'D'.
