About the Item

A. J. Fuller, figural custom Tiffany & Co. pattern, Designer: Arthur Le Roy Barney There were a total of only 12 custom patterns ever made by Tiffany & Co. Charles Carpenter's Tiffany Silver book: "The custom-designed private pattern sets were quite expensive, even for those extravagant times. The time consuming and laborious process of designing and hand making new dies ran the cost of these sets into the thousands of dollars." This pattern features a figural Art Nouveau woman with foliate bonnet with the owner’s initials located directly below the woman's bust and unique knife handles with blades turned 90 degrees. Provenance: Dr. Andrew Jackson Fuller was a prominent surgeon. He studied at the Maine Medical School, at the University of New York, and at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. He graduated from the Maine Medical School in 1841; settled in Searsmont, and in 1847 moved to Bath, Maine. Among his successful major operations have been amputation at the hip joint and resection of the humerus. He is a member of the Maine Medical Association and its president in 1871. Previous to the war he served seven years as surgeon of the Second Maine Infantry, and was post surgeon at Bath during the war, saving countless lives. He served as president of the Bath Board of Trade many years, has served one term as trustee of the Maine Insane Hospital, and was one of the consulting physicians and surgeons of the Maine General Hospital. Doctor Fuller manifested a strong interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of his adopted city, standing high in the esteem of all its people. His conscientious and persevering labors in behalf of Bath shipping interests attracted world wide attention. The famous AJ Fuller Freight vessel was named after him and was launched from Bath, Maine in the year 1881. Exceedingly rare monumental A.J. Colonial by Tiffany Sterling Silver Flatware Set Service 179 Pcs Fitted Chest
By Tiffany & Co.
Located in Big Bend, WI
The pattern Colonial was introduced in 1895 but did not get patent until 1896. This contradicts the mark, as the dies were made with the anticipated patent date, and when it happened later than expected the expense to change it was too high. The pattern was discontinued in 1913. It was designed by Paulding Franham and was plain in comparison to his later designs. The handle is bordered by four bands which form a scroll with leaf, but the back is not an identical pattern, but similar. George Paulding Farnham (1859-1927) was born in New York City. His aunt married Charles T Cook, who assumed presidency of Tiffany after the death of Charles L Tiffany in 1902. Farnham attended Tiffany school and was trained by Edward C Moore and Charles Gosjean. He stayed with Tiffany and eventually became a board member in 1888 and in 1893 was appointed chief designer and head of jewelry later also assuming the role of artistic director of the silver department as well. His flatware designs were similar to jewelry designs, very ornate, elaborate, and in "beaux arts" tradition. He created six full sterling lines for Tiffany during his time, before leaving Tiffany in 1908.
